VE Day
Unfortunately due to lockdown the ‘VE Day street party’ that the School Council at Holly Grove had organised could not go ahead. But lockdown and Covid-19 did not stop Holly Grove’s staff and pupils from celebrating VE Day in their own special way. Holly Grove sent out activity packs to each pupil and a list of ways in which they could celebrate whilst staying safely at home.
VE Day on the 7th May marked the 75th Anniversary of the surrender of Germany at the end of the Second World War in 1945. Staff and pupils were encouraged to hang bunting up and turn their streets red, white and blue, make Union Jack flags, have a 1940s style picnic, listen to old music, learn about their families involvement in WWII and raise a good old cup of tea to our heroes.
At 11am a 2 minutes silence was held to remember all the fallen heroes and reflect on the service and sacrifice given by so many.
At 3pm families were invited to clap on their doorstep and say “to those who gave so much we thank you.”
At 9pm the Queen gave a speech to the nation. The Queen said the message of VE Day is “never give up, never despair.” Click here to watch the Queens speech.

“On Thursday we made some bunting for VE Day by painting with red and blue on white paper. On Friday we had a VE Day picnic and Thomas dressed in red, white and blue. In the morning Thomas watched a VE Day programme with me on BBC1 and we talked about the war, the queen, why we do a two minute silence and why there are wreaths of poppies and flowers. We also took part in the two minute silence and Thomas did really well with this, he tried really hard. Lastly we watched the spitfires fly and he liked seeing these.”
